A Morning Stroll by Grant Orchard

The Encounters Nominated Shorts Season continues with the Oscar® Animation nominations presented in partnership with Shorts International. This programme includes the UK’s only, but very strong nomination A MORNING STROLL by Grant Orchard. Loosely inspired by a real life event recounted in Paul Auster's book 'True Tales of American Life' this animation has been thrust into the public eye since picking up the Best British Animation award at Encounters last November. Now with awards from Sundance and BAFTA, all eyes are on the Oscars®. The beautifully illustrated French animation DIMANCHE/SUNDAY by Patrick Doyon also screened in competition at Encounters festival last year and features within the programme.

The Academy Awards® will take place on 26 February. To find out more about the Oscar® nominated short films and animations visit the Encounters blog here.

Every ticket holder gets 15% off a drink at the Café/Bar after the screening, and the Encounters team invites you to join them in a toast to the short film nominees of 2012.

A Morning Stroll (UK- 7 mins)
Director: Grant Orchard
When a New Yorker walks past a chicken on his morning stroll, we are left to wonder which one is the real city slicker

Dimanche/Sunday (Canada- 9 mins)
Director: Patrick DoyonEvery Sunday, it's the same old routine! The train clatters through the village and almost shakes the pictures off the wall. In the church, Dad dreams about his toolbox. And of course later Grandma will get a visit and the animals will meet their fate.

The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore (USA- 17 mins)
Director: William Joyce & Brandon Oldenburg
Inspired, in equal measures, by Hurricane Katrina, Buster Keaton, The Wizard of Oz, and a love for books, THE FANTASTIC FLYING BOOKS OF MR. MORRIS LESSMORE is a poignant, humorous allegory about the curative powers of story. Using a variety of techniques (miniatures, computer animation, 2D animation) co-directors William Joyce and Brandon Oldenburg present a hybrid style of animation that harkens back to silent films and MGM Technicolor musicals. Morris Lessmore is old fashioned and cutting edge at the same time.

La Luna (USA- 6:53 mins)
Director: Enrico Casaros
LA LUNA is the timeless fable of a young boy who is coming of age in the most peculiar of circumstances. Tonight is the very first time his Papa and Grandpa are taking him to work. In an old wooden boat they row far out to sea, and with no land in sight, they stop and wait. A big surprise awaits the little boy as he discovers his family's most unusual line of work. Should he follow the example of his Papa, or his Grandpa? Will he be able to find his own way in the midst of their conflicting opinions and timeworn traditions?

Wild Life (Canada- 14 mins)
Director: Amanda Forbis, Wendy Tilb
Calgary, 1909. An Englishman moves to the Canadian frontier, but is singularly unsuited to it. His letters home are much sunnier than the reality. Intertitles compare his fate to that of a comet.

Skylight (Canada- 5 mins)
Director: David Baas
Skylight is a mock animated documentary about the ecological plight of penguins in the Antartic, possibly fortelling cataclysmic results for the rest of the world.

Hybrid Union (USA- 5 mins)
Director: Serguei Kouchnerov
“We are in a race and our future is at stake. Will we win the race?”. This alarming message is becoming a part of the everyday life and refers to social awareness of global issues that overshadow the future. It doesn’t matter what caused the climate change. We still need a clean air and water.

Nullarbour (Australia- 11 mins)
Director: Alister Lockhart, Patrick Sarell
A brash young punk and a laid-back old digger travel across Australia’s Nullarbor Plain in an animated road movie to nowhere. Sometimes in this vast and barren landscape, all you’re left with is each other.

Amazonia (USA- 6 mins)
Director: Sam Chen
In the dangerous world of the Amazon Rainforest, finding a meal proves to be an impossible task for a little treefrog named Bounce. His luck changes when he meets Biggy, a blue-bellied treefrog who takes him under his guidance and shows him the ways of the jungle in this animated journey set to Beethoven's Symphony No.8.
