Encounters and Calling the Shots have supported four young filmmakers from Bristol to attend a week long workshop in Budapest, Hungary. Where they will work with five groups from other European cities to create a short film project. Follow their news daily through our blog:
Day 1:
Benji reports from Budapest on the Moving Districts Workshop for young creatives organised by Calling the Shots and EUShorts.
After exploring the ruins – the ruined bars in district 6 where both young trendy types and punks hang out – the Brits drink a few and then pass out!
Sunday, the Brits were split into four groups and then headed north toward Buda for task one: a short film based in one of the four locations we would be shown. We found ourselves in leafy suburbs of communities once built by lawyers but now inhabited by the middle classes (the lawyers have left for high grounds).
We take trains to lonely baroque buildings, then trams, then go back underground, and then finally emerge at a working class 19th century gas station where forgotten fairytale towers loom ( location- choice 3). Groups are excited and debate as we then proceed to location 4 where 70,000 lives stacked up high in concrete, ex-socialist jungles. House proud.
After fives hours of walking back to pizza, beer and discussions, teams come to an agreement:
Addy's group – Forgotten Fairytale tower
Benji's group – Leafy lawyer suburbs
Geoff's group – 1930's baroque buildings
Vincent's group – Socialist housing Project
Quickly discovering the wonders of the cultural melting pot, the team have now become lost amongst the wide range of artistic styles. Blogs aplenty, we have truly set sail, crewed by the French and navigated by socio-cultural lectures towards a mystical island of cinematic dreams. To the screen we go.
