FOCUS ON SWITZERLAND

Encounters presents a Swiss Focus for its 19th edition, in partnership with Swiss Films and Internationale Kurzfilmtage Winterthur, and supported by the Swiss Embassy, The Swiss Cultural Fund in Britain and Helvetic Airways.

Thematic showcases will highlight the country's hottest film and animation exports. Meanwhile, Franz Treichler of The Young Gods  performs a live soundtrack for an overview of experimental films of the 20th century, Artist Yves Netzhammer creates an installation of his short film trilogy, and we welcome Marie-Elsa Sgualdo and Isabelle Favez for our Filmmaker Focus events.

To top it all off, a free-entry Pop-Up Cine Chalet will be open for the whole week in The Parlour Showrooms. Far from a nostalgic trip through idyllic mountain pastures, it will challenge your perceptions of Swiss national identity..

God, You're So Square

FRI 20 SEPT 15:45 WATERSHED CINEMA 3

“God, you’re so square”, is what Iris says to Travis in Taxi Driver. He is the symbol of the dilemma many Swiss men seem to struggle with (at least on screen). This programme, presented by Internationale Kurzfilmtage Winterthur, dismantles the image of the square, predictable and efficient Swiss man and shows his struggle to find his place in society.

The Chalet Show! Swiss Animation Greats

When it comes to Swiss animation, most people think of Georges Schwizgebel. Whilst it's true he raised the profile of Swiss animation to new heights he is just one tree out of a forest full of young and talented people - each one looking forward to emerging and discovering the world for themselves. Here are fifteen animated shorts to quit the little hut in the woods and get to the chalet, high above the mountains, reaching the summit to become giants!
