Encounters visits Animated Exeter
It's a strange experience to visit an event that you used to organise and for once be on the other side. You realise that you have become that person you used to hate, not reading the programme properly, turning up late to events and screenings and sometimes missing them all together as you drink too much in the bar.
However, a great time was had as a visitor to Animated Exeter and I especially enjoyed seeing the work in the under 18's catagory, ExAnimation. The winner of this year's individuals prize was non other than the festival favourite Barnaby Walters who has previously won the award to his stop-motion spectacular using all sorts of home made models and sets. Congratulations Barnaby for your new film, Electrobugs, see below.
Finally, in the BAFTA Animation Nominees screening I got to see the new BAFTA winning animation, 'A Matter of Loaf or Death', which goes without saying is Aardman providing there usual delight of entertainment. It was screened along side the other nominees which had both screened at Encounters in November.
'Varmints' (above) by Mark Craske and 'Codswallop' by the Mcleod Brothers. After the screening Greg Mcleod was interviewed on stage by Helen Brunsdon and gave an thoughtful insight into the world of the Mcleod Brothers. Check out the film on you tube, along with many other recent offerings. They will also be blogging on their own sight the production process of their new film, which will be well worth the read.
More information can be found on Animated Exeter website, which continues until 21 February. Check out the trailer which was created by 2nd year students from the University College Falmouth, I was pretty impressed with it and definately think it deserves the best trailer award for the festival. Well done guys!
